For the past several months, Repeat SMP has operated as an application-only community. The goal was simple: reduce trolls, griefers, and bad actors before they ever had a chance to join.
While that approach did provide some level of protection, we ultimately came to the conclusion that it was also preventing legitimate players from ever giving the server a chance.
Every additional step between discovering Repeat SMP and actually joining is another opportunity for someone to simply close the page and move on to another server. Most new players don't know if they'll enjoy a community until they experience it for themselves. Asking them to complete an application before they can even log in creates unnecessary friction during that first impression.
We believe that first impression matters.
Why We Changed
After a lot of discussion, we decided that the benefits of making the server immediately accessible outweigh the drawbacks.
Will there be trolls from time to time?
Absolutely.
No public server is completely immune to bad actors. However, we believe that strong moderation, logging, rollback systems, and clear rules are a better solution than placing barriers in front of every new player who simply wants to give Repeat SMP a try.
Rather than assuming every new player is here to cause problems, we'd rather welcome everyone and deal with the small percentage that chooses to break the rules.
Growing a Healthy Community
Repeat SMP has always been about building a long-term community.
To keep improving the server, developing new features, hosting events, and maintaining reliable infrastructure, we need a healthy and active player base. A growing community naturally creates more activity, more friendships, more content, and ultimately more people who choose to support the server.
This decision wasn't made because we want "more numbers."
It was made because we believe making the server easier to join gives Repeat SMP the best opportunity to continue growing for years to come.
We'll Be Watching
This isn't a decision we're making blindly.
We'll continue monitoring player behavior, moderation workload, and community growth throughout Season 2.
If opening the server creates problems that outweigh the benefits, we're not afraid to revisit our decision. But we believe every policy should be guided by real-world results, not assumptions.
